FA Announce New Independent Chairman

Triesman was recommended by the FA's board in back in December, and now the appointment has been approved by the FA's council.

Triesman, an avid Tottenham fan and season ticket holder, will succeed Geoff Thompson, but the outgoing ex-chairman will continue in his vice-president role with both Uefa and Fifa.

Triesman, who once was a member of the Communist Party during the 70’s, accepted the appointment with pride.

"It is an exceptional honour to be elected as chairman of the FA," said Triesman.

"Having the trust of the people who lead English football gives me an opportunity to develop the game in England at all levels and ensure its future success.

"I am greatly looking forward to combining my deep love of the game with the experience and knowledge I have gained in other areas of professional life."

The appointment of an independent chairman seems to be the first step of the “root and branch” analysis promised by Thompson and Co. in the wake of England’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

However, the move to assign an independent chairman was one of the main recommendations of the Burns Review – which was completed in 2005, meaning the FA has taken three years to follow through on the proposal that their own sponsored review outlined.
