Seven players have appointments to meet with Allofs to try to sort out the expiring deals. Tim Borowski, Daniel Jensen, Jurica Vranjes, Petri Pasanen, Ivan Klasnic, and reserve keeper Christian Vander all have just six months left on their current contracts at the Weser Stadion.
The only player not to have been invited to contract talks is Pierre Wome, who has remained in Germany and not travelled to the training camp. His long-term injury and his recent criticism of the club may have harmed his chances anyway.
The club have stressed that they want to keep the remaining six players. In particular Jensen, Vranjes and Pasanen are valued by trainer Thomas Schaaf for their versatility.
The trio have performed admirably in the first half of the season, stepping in at various stages for key players Frings, Borowski and Clemens Fritz.
Daniel Jensen has seen his market value soar, but has nonetheless received a lucrative offer from Olympiacos. “I’m 28 now and have to think about my family” he said.
The same goes for Borowski, to whom Werder have also indicated that they are willing to offer an improved deal. The German international wants to earn more money, but the club do not want to pay over the odds.
However there has been reported interest from Atletico Madrid (AS), Hamburg and Bayern Munich (Kicker). Borowski has yet to comment so far.
There is more clarity regarding Jurica Vranjes, who appears likely to extend his contract to 2011 in the coming weeks, even though he has been mainly used as a back-up player. There have been two reported enquiries from Russian clubs.
The futures of Klasnic, Pasanen and Vander will in all likelihood be cleared up in the New Year. With Klasnic, the club want to wait until he has proved his fitness after his kidney transplant.
Both Pasanen and Vander could be tempted with a move to a club where their playing chances would be greater.
