The Serbian has been in the job for four months and is preparing the team for the third round of World Cup qualifiers which start next month.
China have been drawn in Group One with Australia, Qatar and opening opponents Iraq.
The 52 year-old former Red Star Belgrade and Arsenal player is in the UAE with the team participating in a four-team tournament – the Dubai Cup Challenge.
"China are a sleeping giant and I am here to wake up this giant," Petrovic told Gulf News after a goalless draw with the United Arab Emirates.
"I have been with the national team for four months and I am confident the players are capable of giving off much more."
"We are aware of the challenges before us at the moment. The first is to get as ready as possible in this short time for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. Unfortunately, time is not on our side and we have to make use of each opportunity that comes our way," Petrovic said.
"I admit China are one of the biggest countries and we have consistently failed to deliver on the world stage. It is high time this is corrected and I am here to take the steps necessary to put China where they belong," Petrovic promised.
"We still have a lot of work to be done still. We need to be mentally and physically ready for our World Cup qualifiers. We need time and we are aware we do not have it at the moment.”
