Cabrini Steps Down From Syria Post

The salary of the 1982 World Cup winner and former Juventus full-back was to be paid by a Syrian company but the General Sports Federation of Syria were opposed to the existing arrangement.

"After finalising the agreement with the Syrian FA, the General Sports Federation of Syria surprised us by opening the door for other companies to sponsor the national team," Hassan Al Astwani, president of the company financing the deal told reporters.

"Therefore, we have decided to withdraw from sponsoring the national team."

Ex-boss Farj Ibrahim will step into the breach for this month’s friendlies against Qatar and Bahrain and probably for the start of the World Cup qualifiers in February.

Syria face Iran in the opening game of a group that also contains UAE and Kuwait.
