The Turkish Football Association is mourning the death of one of its loyalist servants, chief consultant to the president Gündüz Tekin Onay who has died of cancer aged 65.
Fine career
Having played professional football for eleven years, he turned to coaching with Kastamonuspor in 1968. A year later Onay took charge of Turkey's youth national teams before becoming assistant coach to the seniors. Aged 30 he secured his first top-flight post with Adanaspor AŞ and over the next 21 years managed some of the country’s leading clubs, including Beşiktaş JK. During his time at Adanaspor he held the unusual position of being both head coach and president.
President saddened
In 1997 he took his skills to the federation, where he became a leading figure in grassroots initiatives. TFF president Haluk Ulusoy said: "I am deeply saddened after the death of my close friend, colleague, and an unforgettable figure in Turkish football, Gündüz Tekin Onay. We've lost a man who served Turkish football at every level. Onay always brought new ideas – we could even call him a football philosopher."
