The Copa del Rey last 16 first legs brought gloom to the Spanish capital on Thursday with Real Madrid CF losing 2-1 at RCD Mallorca and Club Atlético de Madrid drawing 0-0 at home.
Arango winner
Gonzálo Higuain levelled the scores for Madrid within a minute of them going behind to a goal from Uruguayan striker Óscar Trejo in Mallorca after a corner, but they had no response when Venezuelan midfielder Juan Arango restored the Balearic side's lead, beating Polish goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek for a second time four minutes into the second half.
Atlético held
Atlético were left to rue some wasteful finishing as they were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Real Valladolid CF. Diego Forlán and Luis García were both guilty of glaring misses in an open game, but it could easily have been worse for Javier Aguirre's side, with second-choice goalkeeper Ismael Falcón producing a fingertip save to deny winger Sisi a late winner.
