Scottish Cup: Dundee Utd Edge Clyde

Dundee United will go to Love Street in Round Five of the Scottish Cup to face St Mirren after narrowly edging out Clyde in the rearranged cup tie.

The First Division Bully Wee competed well with United for the most part, but couldn’t create enough chances to trouble their SPL visitors. Willo Flood missed a couple of half chances for the Arabs in a hard-fought opening period.

Christian Smith came closest for Clyde when his header forced a good save from Euan McLean.

On 57 minutes, though, a moment of brilliance broke the deadlock. Skipper Barry Robson was barely inside the Clyde half when he looked up and launched a beautiful flighted effort goalwards.

After seeing his shot hit the top corner, he celebrated in a subdued manner. This will fuel rumours that the 29-year-old could be on his way to Celtic Park soon. More likely though, was that the classy midfielder didn’t wish to over-celebrate against lower league opposition.

Robson was also a set-piece menace all night, making David Hutton work hard between the home sticks.

At the other end, McLean was equal to Craig McKeown’s late volley.

Clyde couldn’t find a grandstand finish as Craig Levein’s men avoided meeting the same fate as Celtic, who fell here at Broadwood two seasons ago.
