"Fabio Capello is a great coach and I hope he does well for England", said the Portuguese.
It appeared to be Capello's ability to get the best out of his players that had really impressed Ronaldo.
"He will know who the best players are and he will pick them", he added.
Capello, if you recall, was keen to sign the then slightly unsettled Ronaldo when he was at Real Madrid but the move never really got past the mutual admiration stage.
After witnessing Ronaldo's sulky, stuttering performance against Aston Villa no doubt the no-nonsense coach would have a word or two with the star, were he an Englishman.
Rooney, on the other hand, came on without so much as a pout and grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. Ronaldo, of course, was the beneficiary, bundling the ball over the line for the first goal, and knows first hand that Rooney is the most vital player in Capello's rebuilding of England.
"Everyone knows Wayne is a good player", he shrugged, "I still believe England have a great squad and with Capello in charge, I am sure they will do fantastic."
