Relieved Smith Gives Gretna Credit

Kenny Deuchar cancelled out Barry Ferguson’s first-half opener, before Daniel Cousin sealed the points for Rangers.

Rangers boss Walter Smith was a relieved man after edging plucky SPL rookies Gretna to go four-points clear at the top of the league.

"We didn't reach the level of our last few games although I felt we deserved our lead at half time," Smith told the BBC.

"Gretna's equaliser gave them a big lift and we had to work very hard and were a bit scrappy in some aspects.

"However sometimes you have to give credit to the opposition on the night."

This was the first of a series of midweek Rangers games due to SPL and Scottish Cup fixture congestion.
