Oman Change Coaches - Ribas Replaces Calderon

Calderon, who led Oman to the 2007 Asian Cup, was fired after poor recent results.

The Gulf State recorded two draws with Kenya and lost to Jordan.

Hailing from Uruguay, Ribas will see his new team in action next week when they face China in a friendly.

There are further tests before Oman face Bahrain in the opening game of Group B on February 6 including friendlies against UAE, Denmark and Kuwait.

As well as Bahrain, Oman will face Japan and Thailand on the road to South Africa.

"It was a decision based on a comprehensive study of the results of the team in the past months,” Khalid Al Busaidi, Oman FA president, told reporters.

"We had no choice but to take this decision because if Calderon remained as a coach, this would have been harder for the team.

The ousted Argentine accepted the decision but feels that the changes in the federation made his job harder.

"I respect the decision of the Oman Football Association," said Calderon.

"The past seven months that I spent with Oman national team were positive and I worked hard with the team.

"There was good co-operation with the previous board of the football association. On the other hand, I had a disagreement with the new FA who didn't accept my preparation plans and therefore it was better to finish the contract."
