Middlesbrough-Alves Link Resurfaces

The Daily Mail are reporting that the goal-shy Premiership side are preparing to pay a club record £12million for the 26-year-old's signature, which is reportedly also coveted by Manchester City.

Boro chairman Steve Gibson as well as manager Gareth Southgate allegedly met with the Brazilian international's representatives on Teesside yesterday in an effort to sell him on the merits of joining side that was formerly famously graced by Juninho.

Alves had been all set to join AZ Alkmaar on a £13.5m deal on Friday, but the proposed transfer collapsed at the eleventh hour due the player’s desire to play in one of Europe’s top leagues in order to increase his chances of being a regular for the Selecao.

“My dream is to play in the Premier League in England. That will help me stay in the Brazil set-up,” he was quoted as saying on the weekend.

"I played for Brazil at Wembley and enjoyed the experience. When I turn up for international duty all the other players arrive from the top clubs. They ask me where I play and laugh when I tell them.

"I want to be in the same bracket as them."

Alves scored 35 goals in 31 appearances last season , including a sensational seven goal match in a league game against Heracles Almelo.
