Defoe Determined To Prove Ramos Wrong

The Sun newspaper quotes the 25-year-old as saying that Ramos told him he is free to leave the club, but that he is determined to show his true worth after starting the overwhelming majority of the games from the bench this season.

"The manager has said I can leave if I want but I want to prove him wrong," said Defoe. "I want to stay here.

"He (Ramos) just said, 'You can leave if you want to'. Yet I have no intentions of leaving this club because I love it here."

When asked about reports suggesting that he has been offered a five year contract extension deal worth £10.5M a season, Defoe said:

"How can I be expected to stay for the next few years if I am going to be on the bench all the time?

"I don't think any player would accept that."

Defoe has scored five goals in seven matches recently, and the sure footedness he has shown in front of goal since his time at West Ham means that he would not be stuck for choices if he did elect to leave Spurs.
