Keane Responds To Clarke Criticism

Clarke spoke out against Keane, saying the manager lacks communication skills and threw chairs in the dressing room after defeats.

"If people believe I'm doing that every week, they're sadly mistaken," insisted Keane. "My management has not changed since I got the job. People said it was working a treat last year.

"The strange thing is that the article mentioned me losing my temper. But I have never really lost it. If people are worried now — bejasus."

Keane went on to recall the tactics of various great managers he had played under, and insisted that their methods of communication with players was no different than his own.

"Being popular is not important for a manager," he declared. "I played under Brian Clough, who was brilliant to me, but I wouldn't upset him or think I was pals with him.

"People ask me about Sir Alex Ferguson. I played under him for 12-and-a-half years, but I had three or four one-on-one conversations with him. You have to keep your distance."

Keane underlined the fact that Clarke was not the best man to judge the situation at the north-eastern club, as he was not a regular in his side at all, having started just one game under the former Manchester United man.

Though the Sunderland board will no doubt be considering Keane's position as the club languish around the drop-zone despite heavy summer investment, it is Clarke who should now be worrying, as he is likely to receive a fine for his outspoken attack on the Irishman.
