Injured Diego Staying Put In Brazil

Werder Bremen's midfield maestro Diego has been given special dispensation to remain in his homeland of Brazil for two more weeks as he seeks to overcome a niggling injury.

"It's a complaint he's continually had to put to one side over the first half of the season," explained coach Thomas Schaaf. "He's played through it for almost a full year and now it needs sorting."

It wasn't revealed exactly what the injury was, but it is not thought to be serious enough to rule Diego out of any match action: he should be fit in time for Werder's first game after the winter break, on 29th January in the DFB-Pokal against Borussia Dortmund.

Nevertheless, it has been agreed that the best course of action is for the star to remain in Brazil, where he has been over the Christmas period.

Instead of flying out with the rest of the Bremen squad to Belek in Turkey for the winter training camp, Diego will undergo a special preventative treatment with the Brazilian national team's physiotherapist in Sao Paulo.
