Although the more informed pundits point out that a truly strong Paulistão depends on the lesser-known teams that pepper the huge Brazilian state turning out stellar performances and upsetting an apple cart or two, few would deny that the spotlights - particularly those shining down from Europe - are firmly centred on the four clubs that dominate São Paulo and have hauled in the overwhelming bulk of local silverware on offer since 1902.
Things have evidently changed over the years with the ever-growing influence of the international football market. Nowadays even the larger Brazilian clubs are forced or seduced into selling off budding stars at ever-younger ages - if they haven’t already been snapped up as spotters and scouts scour youth squads to land promises before their transfer values inflate at absolute level. The chances of seeing revelations may have been reduced, but Brazil is such a prolific producer of talent that the well hasn’t run dry for the Big 4.
A cursory look at the squads that Corinthians, Palmeiras, São Paulo and Santos have confected is enough to confirm that each team can field players of international quality. It may be true that there are more veterans of European service and footballers who sparked yet failed to catch fire, but there’s also the chance to see the first glimpses of future stars who’ve fallen through the trawling nets cast by European clubs and you can bet your bottom Euro that they’ll be on the alert to rectify any overlooked talent with chequebooks ready.
For the smaller clubs this amounts to a juicy late Christmas present - even if they’ve sold the crown jewels on to one of the Big 4 as only the most inept of initial modern contracts don’t foresee a future sale in their legal fine print. For the Big 4 it’s Expo time as they have a great chance to fatten up their cattle for lucrative deals, even the most zealous fans now totally resigned to the fact that they’ll have precious little time to enjoy pearls before the only chance to see their homespun heroes is on a TV screen broadcasting a foreign league.
Perhaps this realisation heightens the focus even more as supporters make the most of what’s almost certain to be a short stint in Brazil for the truly gifted, but bitterness is sweetened by the perennial chances offered in the New Year. Hope springs eternal of seeing past heroes returning, the fiercely faithful staying and ‘the ones that got away’ from the European fishing fleets attain maturity and hoist titles at home and in a Brazilian club shirt rather than whilst kissing a foreign badge.
SC Corinthians Paulista
Corinthians may be between a rock and a hard place in 2008 after the disastrous dealing of the corrupt and incompetent Dualib administration and the dodgy MSI partnership, but new Coach ‘Mano’ Menezes is an alchemist who already resurrected Grêmio from the second division to a Libertadores final with Boca Juniors within a stunning two years. Since the most recent heyday of Tevez and co. winning the Brasileirão the Corinthians’ Head Coach office has had a virtual revolving door and the club paid dearly for a lack of competent management with the shame of relegation at national level.
45 year-old Luiz Antônio Venker Menezes is seen as the answer to Corinthianos’ prayers with a no-nonsense approach that promises to plug the leaks in a team that was a virtual colander last year. He’s already cut a swathe through the squad that curdled milk in 2007 and is building a characteristically rock-hard team from behind with the aim being a swift return to the national first division - and for that a successful Paulistão is almost obligatory for the Timão (Big Team) to approach second division purgatory with confidence to finish in the top four and return to the elite in 2009.
A major worry was averted as number 1 Felipe was maintained in the side, the keeper having been the object of transfer speculation after a superb 2007 season that saw him come from Bragantino and into the limelight with memorable saves that almost kept Corinthians afloat in the first division. Together with young wing-minded playmaker Lulinha and striker Dentinho (‘Little Teeth’; real name Bruno Bomfim) they make a trio of players that are bound to come in for increased hype if they can manage to carry on growing in the explosive manner that gained them so much newsprint in 2007.
The defence that failed so frequently has been shored up with André Santos and Chicão from Figueirense, Alessandro from Santos and William from Grêmio while midfielders Perdigão and Bóvio bring experience in front of the back four and young creative promise Rafinha (ex-São Bernardo) has already set tongues wagging about a brilliant future. Mano has also recreated a certain Hispanic influence that left along with Tevez and Mascherano in 2006, bringing in late-blooming Uruguayan hitman Beto Acosta, young Chilean defender Cristián Suárez and Argentine striker Germán Herrera from Gimnasia La Plata.
In total fourteen new faces (if Fabinho’s return from Toulouse is confirmed) have landed at the Parque São Jorge (Saint George‘s Park; Corinthians‘ nerve centre on the banks of the nostril-singeing Tiete river) - but where some see salvation in reformulation, others hear alarm bells with too many risky bets arriving at once. Memories of the last ‘Baciada’ (bargain bucket) signings in 2004 are still fresh as most of the gambles were flops that led directly to MSI being able to swiftly seduce with no-questions-asked cash and proven stars.
Paulistão 2008 Base Team
CORINTHIANS (4-2-3-1): Felipe; Andre Santos (Everton), William (C), Chicão (Cristián Suárez) and Alessandro (Coelho / Ratinho / Fabinho); Carlos Alberto (Bóvio / Fabinho) and Bruno Octavio (Fabinho); Perdigão (Rafinha), Acosta (Dentinho), Herrera (Lulinha); Finazzi
SE Palmeiras
Italo-Brazilian side Palmeiras have an old hand back in charge as Wanderley Luxemburgo swapped Santos for the side that he’s helmed four times (1993-95, 1995-6, 2002 and now 2008). He’s the man most likely to favour flowing, flair-driven football in theory, although the atmosphere at the club can swiftly turn sour if the frills aren’t transformed into points. Nevertheless his inside knowledge of the workings at the Parque Antarctica should serve him well and the fact that he’s won the last two editions of the Paulistão puts ’Luxa’ in pole position to complete his own personal hat-trick.
Explosive veteran Edmundo has left (bound for Vasco again) and the attack has been rearmed with Alex Mineiro from Atlético Paranaense, Lenny from Fluminense and Jorge Préa from Pelotas. The Verdão (Big Green) have also netted Élder Granja from Internacional and Diego Souza from Benfica (via Grêmio), although the loss of attacking-midfielder-cum-striker Caio to Frankfurt and the Thiago Neves ‘affair’ were blows.
On the positive side Chilean playmaker Valdivia has been maintained despite fears that European offers would lure the talented midfielder to Europe, his ability to play either a classic number 10 role or ‘in the hole’ as a second striker giving the team a valuable way of penetrating tightly-woven rival rearguards. With a squad that’s head and shoulders above his Santos side from last season, Luxa’s seen as a firm favourite to resurrect a flagging Palmeiras that has only won a single trophy since 2000: the second division in 2003.
Part of the good vibes are the fact that the sharp-suited Coach has won the past two state titles while the rest come from the fact that the last Paulistão trophy that Palmeiras lifted dates back to 1996 - under the much-praised command of Luxemburgo himself. There’s little doubt that there’s been a quality shift upwards from last year with the remaining players also having gone through what Palmeirenses (Palmeiras fans) hope was the last ‘transition year’ before old glories can be relived with the dawn of a new golden age.
Paulistão 2008 Base Team
PALMEIRAS (4-4-2): Diego Cavalieri; Leandro (Leonardo), Dininho (David), Gustavo (Nen) and Élder Granja; Pierre, Martinez, Diego Souza and Valdivia (Deyvid); Lenny (Luiz Henrique / Valdivia / William) and Alex Mineiro
São Paulo FC
Muricy Ramalho’s São Paulo FC have an edge on the others as the club has managed to maintain a style of play despite being a habitual target for international transfers. Centre-back sensation Breno was the latest, snapped up by FC Bayern München, but the canny club has managed to secure the services of several Europe-level players such as Jorge Wagner from Real Betis, Fábio Santos (loan from Olympique Lyonnais), Carlos Alberto (loan from Werder Bremen) and - the cherry on the top (assuming that it’s not soaked in alcohol - Adriano (loan from F.C. Internazionale Milano) - all at the services of SPFC until 10th July 2008.
The latter is set to have the spotlights firmly focused on his every move - on and off the pitch - as the Emperor tries to prove that his new clothes aren’t just plain embarrassing. If he manages to transfer even a fraction of his innate talent to the Tricolor Paulista the ex-Flamengo revelation should present the Paulistão with a quality shift upwards. If not he could well be a weighty albatross around the reigning national champions’ collective neck that may tear apart a squad that didn’t take kindly to Ricardinho’s privileges in 2002.
To add to this bevy of Seleção-level players there’s the inestimable talent of Rogério Ceni in goal despite the marksman-cum-keeper turning 35 on the 22nd of January 2008. Having made it into the FIFA lists and being many Brazilians’ (and not exclusively SPFC fans) top choice for a starting role under Dunga he’s a boon to any team that prizes a watertight rearguard and calm, mature control of a team. His statistics last season were a personal best as he led his side to an (almost) record-breaking solidity in a defence that - despite the loss of Breno - still boasts André Dias, Miranda, Alex Silva, Júnior and now ex-Botafogo stopper Juninho.
Also worth looking out for are the men who kept the midfield solid despite the departures of Bundesliga-bound Brazil players Mineiro (Hertha Berlin) and Josué (Wolfsburg): number 26 Hernanes and number 20 Richarlyson - both tipped for a European move if their Paulistão performances keep pace with their output in the last half of the 2007 national league. Potential stars in the making are set to be unleashed in the shape of 19 year-old right-back Jackson and 18 year-old attacking midfielder Sérgio Mota.
Paulistão 2008 Base Team
SÃO PAULO (3-4-1-2): Rogério Ceni; Miranda, Juninho and Andre Dias (Alex); Richarlyson (Júnior), Fabio Santos (Richarlyson), Hernanes, Joilson (Jackson / Reasco); Jorge Wagner (Carlos Alberto / Hugo); Dagoberto (Aloisio / Borges) and Adriano (Aloisio)
Santos FC
The only one of the Paulista Big 4 to hail from outside the big smog of São Paulo city is the all-white club nicknamed Peixe (Fish) due to the home in the coastal port city of Santos. This club may have reached dreamy heights of vying with Real Madrid in the 1960s that saw the phenomenon that saw Pelé bloom (and lead the Peixe to three consecutive Paulistão titles) but 2008 sees the other three sides - arguably even crisis-torn Corinthians - able to field theoretically stronger sides than defending Paulistão champs Santos who look like underdogs in their quest to repeat three state titles in a row.
In a reversal of the 2004 situation Émerson Leão steps in as Wanderley Luxemburgo bows out as Coach, the latter now at a Palmeiras that spat Leão out in 2006 while Émerson Leão retakes his seat at the club where he nurtured Robinho, Diego and Elano to 2002 Brazilian league-winning success. Given that the club was strapped for cash back then the ex-keeper promoted and honed young talents into a triumphant and vibrant young team - something that may well be demanded of him yet again in 2008.
The Coach who often comes in for criticism for unabashed arrogance and glib sarcasm has already won a Paulistão, helming São Paulo FC to the 2005 title, but he’s got his work cut out to follow in the footsteps of ‘ex-friend’ Wanderley Luxemburgo - winner of the past two editions with Santos. The signings so far have annoyed the Santos faithful: clumpy Betão from Corinthians, iffy Luciano Henrique from Internacional, dodgy Fabiano from Sport and variable ex-Palmeiras holding midfielder Marcinho Guerreiro from Arsenal Kyiv. Hardly something to pop open even a bottle of Guaraná over, far less some champagne.
The two ‘Klébers’ - 32 year-old striker Kléber Pereira and 27 year-old left-back-cum-inside-left Kléber (seen recently scoring for Brazil and still tipped for a move back to Europe sooner or later) - are still mature references as is Chilean 4x4 Maldonado. Leão has, however, rejuvenated the squad with the exits of Antônio Carlos, Pedrinho, Baiano and Dejan Petković.
This theoretically allows for easier transfusions of young blood via - from the back up - 20 year-old left-back Carlinhos, 20 year-old centre-back Marcelo, 18 year-old left-back Thiago Carleto, 19 year-old holding midfielder Dionisio, 20 year-old attacking midfielder Adriano, 20 year-old strikers Wesley and Moraes. All are expected to be given more chances to show their mettle in battle more than last year when an ill-advised attempt to import cheap hopefuls from minnows Iraty backfired for Luxa.
Santistas (Santos fans) will be hoping that this will be a new crop of brilliant Meninos da Vila (Boys from the Vila Belmiro), although there is a certain amount of nervousness as to overloading and burning out players who still could do with a year or two on the bench rather than shouldering a heavy burden straight away. The potential for cremating still-green hopefuls is enormous - especially given Leão’s infamous inability to shoulder the blame when things go pear-shaped.
The first hurdle saw Santos fall straight on their collective faces as Portuguesa humbled the defending champs with a 2-0 corrective in the opening game at Morumbi and there’s a lot of work to do to avoid a fiasco as the jury’s still out as to whether Leão’s 2002 successes were the result of surfing a wave of rare talent in Robinho, Diego, Elano, Renato (Sevilla) and Alex (Chelsea) or a reflection of an innate ability to groom young stars.
Paulistão 2008 Base Team
SANTOS (4-3-3): Fabio Costa; Kléber (Carlinhos / Thiago Carleto), Betão (Marcelo), Evaldo and Felipe; Rodrigo Souto (Dionisio), Marcinho Guerreiro (Maldonado) and Rodrigo Tabata (Adriano / Vitor Junior); Wesley, Remain (Moraes) and Kléber Pereira
