Smith Admits Ignorance Over Hutton Deal

In the face of conflicting reports about the status of Alan Hutton's mooted transfer to Spurs, Rangers boss Walter afmits: "I don’t know what’s happening."

There have been reports tonight that Tottenham have launched a fresh bid to sign the Scotland international right-back by raising their initial offer.

But they conttradict other reports that suggest the deal is now dead.

Rangers had initially accepted an £8 million offer from Spurs for Hutton last week, but the player decided against the move, insisting he was focused on playing for the Scottish giants.

Smith has said he expects Hutton to keep to his word by staying at Rangers at least until until the end of the season.

But he now admits that he can't guarantee that will happen.

"I don't know what's happening. There are so many reports flying around," Smith told BBC Scotland's Sportsound.

"As far as I'm aware, Spurs haven't made an increased bid for Alan Hutton.

"Where the player is, with his situation, is fairly straightforward to me.

"He turned down Tottenham, said he wanted to stay at Rangers and as far as I'm aware he's still a Rangers player and will report to training on Wednesday morning."

Hutton is highly regarded by the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, and the possibility of an improved offer from Spurs could conceivably prompt Manchester United into tabling a bid with Rangers for the defender - even though Ferguson has previously ruled out any buying activity during the current mid-season transfer window.
