Riise And Ashton Pulled Into Newcastle Mix

The Daily Mirror reports that new Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan is considering a £7m bid for West Ham United forward Dean Ashton.

With Shola Ameobi being linked with a move elsewhere, there's room for a new striker at St. James' Park, with Keegan allegedly seeing 24-year-old Ashton as an ideal partner for Michael Owen.

Liverpool stopper John Arne Riise, too, has been linked with a switch to the North-East.

The Norwegian international defender joined up at Anfield in 2001 for £4.6m and has since established himself as a regular, but Keegan is said by The Sun to want the reliable defender's input in his on squad.

A bid of £6.5m may be forthcoming over the next few days in order to strengthen the back line before the end of the winter transfer window.
