A ten-man Newcastle side responded to the 6-0 hammering dished out by Manchester United by beating Stoke 4-1 in their FA Cup replay at St. James Park.
"I am pleased to reach the next round and pleased that the players have some self-respect back after the defeat at Manchester United and put on a good show.
"We were under pressure to get a result and we managed to do that.
"There were a lot of good displays and what is important now is to move beyond this disappointing period."
Moving beyond the Magpies’ recent downturn will be made much easier by the news that former manager Kevin Keegan has signed up for a second period in charge.
Keegan is held in the highest esteem by the Toon Army and they are hopeful he can bring the fun times back to the North-East.
However, it shall be interesting to see whether the new man retains the coaching’s services of Nigel Pearson.
While Keegan (a striker in his playing days) is a former European Footballer of the Year, he has admitted that his strength lies in man-management and not really in coaching, especially the defensive side of matters.
In this area Pearson, a former defender, can be of great benefit to Keegan and will thus probably stay-on for a short while at least.
