Markov back at Bulgaria helm

Plamen Markov has agreed to coach Bulgaria, four years after leading them to UEFA EURO 2004™.

Second spell
Markov first took over the national team in 2002 but left after the European finals in Portugal. But since his departure Hristo Stoichkov and Dimitar Penev have had only short reigns, and Markov has signed a two-year contract taking him up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Part of Bulgaria's team at the 1986 World Cup, Markov led PFC Vidima Rakovski, PFC CSKA Sofia and Wydad AC of Casablanca.

Italy obstacle
The 50-year-old said: "I am glad that Bulgarian Football Union president Borislav Mihailov has faith in me. This is nothing new for me. I know the players and the team. There will be no major changes." Bulgaria play holders Italy, the Republic of Ireland, Cyprus, Georgia and Montenegro in World Cup qualifying Group 8, having finished behind Romania and the Netherlands in their UEFA EURO 2008™ section.
