Gerets Slams Ref Culture After 3-1 Loss To Rennes

Eric Gerets was fuming after his side's 3-1 loss to Rennes, focusing partially on the issue of refereeing, if not the performance of Bruno Coué.

Debutant Juan Angel Krupoviesa saw red 67 minutes in, leaving Sylvain Wiltord to net twice late on and seal a win for the hosts over their ten-man visitors.

"There's no contact any more between refs, coaches and players.

"This wasn't the case before, but the rules have changed, and that's a shame.

"When I was a player, the referee could come to me and say, 'Hey, Gerets, next time it'll be a card' - there was something there between ref and player.

"What bothered me was that the referee first pulled out a yellow, but then after being attacked by ten Rennes players, changed his mind. That's the biggest complaint that I have."

He hinted at more refereeing shortcomings, stating, "If there really was offside for [Rennes'] first goal and [Rennes' Mickael] Pagis deserved a red, then we have cause for complaint.

"However, we still shouldn't have let the opponent control the game in the second period. To blame the ref is too easy and I won't have it."
