Result Is What Matters
Real Madrid survived some tremendous pressure from Levante, but came out fighting at the other end of the tunnel, scoring twice through Ruud van Nistelrooy to once again pull seven points clear at the top of the table.
“All that matters is that we won," said Gago after the game, when asked about the problems.
"In the first half we created a lot of chances that we couldn't finish, like Robinho's shot to the post.
"The three points and the fact that we're still the league leader are what count.
"Our opponents gave us a really hard time, and the match got even harder after not scoring in the first half, but it became easier after Van Nistelrooy's goal.”
I'm Here To Help
Los Merengues looked particularly soft in the middle, struggling for control and very clearly missing Diarra.
“I'm here to contribute and to make sure the manager has a tough time deciding who plays," said Gago, asked about his own input.
"I analyzed the Mallorca match and realized I need to play more in the center, not along the wings. That's what I tried to do today.”
Derby Date
The attention will now turn to the second leg against Mallorca on Wednesday, after which it is the Madrid derby.
“We're looking forward to playing Atletico," said the Argentine.
"Derbies are important because we have to win them for our fans. It's a must win if we're to maintain our advantage over our most direct rivals.”
