Furious Vukic Revolts Against Sale

Serbian midfielder Zvonimir Vukic is hoping for a move back to the Premier League after falling out with his club, Shakhtar Donetsk, but only in the summer.

Shakhtar's owner Rinat Akhmetov wants to sell the player before his contract ends in the summer but Vukic hasn't taken to this and has refused to be put up for sale.

"They should have told me before they made the decision to sell me,” said an angry Vukic.

"They tortured me for three years, so I'm not interested that they want to make some money with me.

"I don't care! I have no need to hurry. Now everything is in my hands and I will find myself a new club at the end of the season when I will leave the for free.”

The whole episode is just the latest twist in a career that hasn't quite lived up to expectations beyond the Serbian border.

Once dubbed 'The Maradona of The Balkans' by Lothar Matthaus, Vukic made his name during a prolific four-year stint with Partizan Belgrade, scoring 53 times, including 22 in one season, from midfield.

But spells at Athletico Madrid, Portsmouth and Shakhtar Donetsk have seen him struggle to make an impact.

Despite this, former Serbia & Montenegro coach, Ilija Petkovic, considered Vukic as one of his most important players and selected him for Germany 2006, even though he was recovering from a broken leg.

Although this current outburst of player power is unlikely to endear him to Premier League managers, he feels the move would re-energise him as a footballer: "I would easily go back to England but...I have to wait to end my sad story with Shakhtar."
