Eintracht Frankfurt coach Friedhelm Funkel has extended his contract until summer 2009 as he continues to take the club forward.
Success story
The 54-year-old former KFC Uerdingen 05, MSV Duisburg, FC Hansa Rostock and 1. FC Köln boss took over at Frankfurt in 2004 and in his first season in charge led them back into the Bundesliga. The following campaign Eintracht reached the German Cup final and last term they competed in the UEFA Cup after a 12-year absence. Throughout that time they have preserved their top-flight status and at the current winter break they lie ninth with just four defeats from 17 games. "I am delighted as we were able to reach an agreement within about 30 seconds," said Eintracht chairman Heribert Bruchhagen. "Friedhelm Funkel has character and is reliable, while also having ability and lots of experience."
