Fabio Santos Leaves Lyon On Loan For Personal Reasons

Fabio Santos has opted to return to Brazil for six months for the sake of his pregnant wife.

The 27-year-old arrived at Lyon in January 2007 from Cruzeiro, but has been compelled to return to his homeland after just a year in France.

An emotional Santos told the French press, "Yes, I'm going to Sao Paulo for 6 months.

"It was difficult for me to make this decision, but my wife needed to return to Brazil.

"She has experienced some difficulties during her pregnancy, and it's better that I'm with her as our son arrives. It's easier.

"But I would like to apologise to everyone for not being able to stay and help this Lyon squad that I love.

"I'd also like to apologise to the fans, who have supported me a lot. But rest assured, I'll be back in six months!"

The 27-year-old midfielder took part in eight matches this season in Ligue 1, scoring his first goal for the club in the process.

While he had struggled to carve out a regular starting spot for himself, there were recently signs of improvement in his performances. He is eager to keep these going upon his eventual return.

"I want to thank everyone at the club: the managers, players, the Lyon fans - I'm suffering a lot," he continued.

"It's very hard to leave this club, but family is important to me. I want to deal with my personal problems and then come back stronger to win titles with Lyon.

"Sao Paulo is a great club in Brazil, but the club I'm leaving is also great. It's a very painful day. I promise to come back in June and do everything I can to win titles with Lyon.

"I also want to show everyone the real Fabio Santos, because I've not yet shown my true worth at Lyon."
