Heerenveen striker Afonso Alves was due to sign for AZ Alkmaar on Friday, but the proposed transfer collapsed at the eleventh hour.
And now the Brazilian could be heading for England and the Barclays Premier League.
There are reports that Middlesbrough are tracking the forward - but also that Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is planning a bid.
Alves, who scored 35 goals in 31 games last season, is said to be "itching for a move to the Premiership" in order to keep his place in the Brazilian national squad.
"My dream is to play in the Premier League in England. That will help me stay in the Brazil set-up," Alves told the Sunday Mirror.
"I played for Brazil at Wembley and enjoyed the experience. When I turn up for international duty all the other players arrive from the top clubs. They ask me where I play and laugh when I tell them.
"I want to be in the same bracket as them."
The Sunday Mirror also claims that Eriksson is looking at Bayern Munich striker Lukas Podolski, 22, and says he could snare him in a loan deal with a view to a permanent move in the summer.
Meanwhile, according to the Guardian Online, Brazil striker Fred is Eriksson's number one target. Lyon are apparently asking around £9 million for the 24-year-old, who also interests PSG.
