Chaparro: Copa Not Our Priority

Betis currently lie in 18th position in La Liga, occupying the last of the three relegation places and Chaparro feels that staying in the Primera Division is far more important that maintaining a cup run.

"The priority is the game against Getafe and the one against Recre(ativo) the following week," he told Marca.

However, he was quick to point out that the Copa del Rey itself is an important competition, just that the circumstances were not right for his team this year.

"That does not mean that the Cup is not important," he confirmed.

Chaparro's side are currently in the midst of an injury crisis with a number of players unavailable for selection, which has forced him to pick players that are maybe not 100% fit.

"The nine injuries that we have mean that it is essential to save players for Sunday and has meant that we have had to play players who are not fully fit and can pick up another injury, such as Mark González."

González is one of those that is likely to be rested on Wednesday, alongside Rafael Sobis, Jose Mari and Edu, amongst others, with Chaparro expecting to make "five or six changes compared to the team on Sunday" for the Valencia tie.

Whilst speaking of the injury crisis at the club, Chaparro confirmed that David Odonkor will return from his knee troubles within the next fifteen days and he is expecting the German winger to make an impact in the second half of the season.

"We expect the best of him," Chaparro stated.

"He now understands Spanish and is more integrated in the group."

Finally, the talk turned to the transfer window, where Chaparro stated that he would like to add reinforcements to his squad, but that January is not always the best time to get the players you really want.

"If somebody comes in they must improve the side and have a good attitude. In January, this is not easy because teams do not want to let players with those qualities leave," he concluded.
