Celtic Snap Up Middlesbrough Starlet

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate was left reeling after 20-year-old striker Ben Hutchison signed a pre-contract agreement with Glasgow giants Celtic.

The young Englishman, who could also play for Jamaica through his grandparents, joined Boro in 2006 from non-league outfit Arnold Town.

Hutchison made a scoring Boro debut in October of last year in a 3-1 defeat at Manchester City. He made his first start earlier this month in the FA Cup Third Round win at Bristol City.

The Riverside reserve striker isn’t hanging around in his bid for first team football, though. With the patchy form and fitness of Celtic strikers Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Chris Killen and the imminent departures of Derek Riordan and Maciej Zurawski, the burly youngster may see an opportunity to partner Scott MacDonald up front.

"It's something that has emerged over the last couple of days and I haven't even had a chance to speak to Ben," Southgate revealed.

"I don't want to say too much about that at this moment in time because there is a bit of investigating to be done into it."

Although one for the future, Gordon Strachan is reportedly weighing up a late monetary bid in order to bolster his frontline this month.
