According to reports from his native Slovakia, 23-year-old Martin Skrtel could soon be joining Liverpool from Zenit St Petersburg for around £7 million.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has confirmed that he is looking to bring in a central defender to Anfield during the January transfer window in order to bolster his squad.
Skrtel is emerging as the Spaniard's target.
Liverpool have been exposed in central defence this season following the injury to Daneil Agger, which has seen full-back Alvaro Arbeloa switched inside as an emegency centre-half in some matches.
Skrtel, a Slovakian international, is highly rated and has also reportedly interested Valencia, Newcastle, Spurs and Everton.
However, Liverpool are thought to be in pole position, having made a firm offer for Skrtel.
