Benfica’s controversial midfielder Kostas Katsouranis is set to continue at the club until at least the end of the season.
The Greek international was recently dropped from the Benfica squad due to an altercation with centre-back Luisao during a 1-1 draw with Vitoria de Setubal. During the match, Katsouranis and Luisao had a disagreement with each other, with the players ending up insulting and pushing each other.
The spat led to both players being substituted immediately, and with Katsouranis seemingly being the protagonist of the incident, he was dropped for the following matches.
However, despite rumours of a possible exit to Atletico Madrid, it now looks as if the central midfielder will not be leaving the Portuguese giants during the winter transfer window.
Katsouranis’ agent, Rodger Linse, met yesterday with Benfica officials and presented two concrete offers from other clubs for the player, both of which were profusely rejected by the Lisbon club. Benfica are reportedly looking for ten million euros for the player, and it seems that the offers may not have been enough to tempt the club into selling him.
With Katsouranis set to represent Greece in the European Championships this summer, it is believed that Benfica will be looking to sell the player after the tournament in the hope that his performances can attract a bid closer to their valuation of the midfielder.
Katsouranis has been a key figure in the Benfica squad since his arrival in 2006, and it looks like, despite recent events, the club will not be talked into selling one of their most prized assets unless the price is right.
