Advocaat Rues Loss Of Škrtel

Martin Škrtel is set to become Liverpool's most expensive defensive signing at a reported £6.5m.

The 23-year-old Slovakia international played in Liverpool this season during the Russian side’s 1-0 defeat in their UEFA Cup match against Everton.

Former Rangers boss Dick Advocaat wasn’t best pleased with the swoop, but understands making the player stay would be unwise when the Premiership is on offer.

"Skrtel's departure is a great loss for our club since Martin is a young and talented player who is capable of growing professionally," Advocaat told Sport Express.

"Speaking about his move to one of the strongest championships in the world, there is no sense in trying to keep Skrtel in St Petersburg."

Liverpool travel to the Riverside to take on Middlesbrough on Saturday, with the Anfield club hoping Škrtel will be with the squad by then. Škrtel himself is hoping for a speedy conclusion.

"I can't say anything definitely now since everything could be decided today or tomorrow," said Škrtel.

Škrtel passed a medical yesterday and is set to join Rafa Benitez’s toiling Reds.
